7. Colonic diverticulosis
Organ: Colon
Description:
The colon has many openings on the mucosal surface. The openings are in line with each other.
Diagnosis: Colonic diverticulosis
Causes:
- Western diet
Theory:
The theory behind the preparation is that the western diet, consisting of much sugar and fats and very little fibre, causes the pressure inside the lumen of the colon to increase. This increased pressure forces the mucosa and submucosa out through the muscularis propria, forming pseudodiverticula.
The diverticula carry the risk of being inflamed due to pieces of feces getting stuck in there. The resulting diverticulitis may cause perforation, which may cause peritonitis and sepsis.
