Simple cysts of the liver can occur in healthy individuals and are usually unproblematic. Like other benign liver tumours, they're usually discovered incidentally. In rare cases they can cause upper right quadrant pain.

Simple liver cysts are easily diagnosed as thin-walled fluid-filled lesions on imaging. The presence of > 20 liver cysts suggest polycystic liver.

Simple asymptomatic liver cysts require no treatment. Symptomatic ones can be drained or removed surgically.
