Post-thrombotic syndrome is a long-term complication of deep vein thrombosis. It occurs in up to 50% of patient within one year of DVT, in spite of anticoagulation. Patients with proximal DVT, severe DVT, and inadequate anticoagulation are at highest risk for post-thrombotic syndrome.

Post-thrombotic syndrome is a cause of secondary chronic venous insufficiency, and the clinical features, evaluation, and treatment is the same as for other causes of chronic venous insufficiency.
