Burkitt lymphoma prep

Organ: Small intestine

Description: We can see a greyish exophytic mass in the mucosa.

Diagnosis: Sporadic Burkitt lymphoma

Causes:

  • Epstein-Barr virus
  • Myc mutation

Theory:

Just from the macroscopy we see here is it impossible to determine that this is a Burkitt lymphoma. It could also be a:

  • Gastrointestinal stromal tumor (GIST)
  • Neuroendocrine tumor (NET)
  • Adenocarcinoma (rare in the small intestine)

Histology must be used to determine the specific type. It’s important to not jump to the conclusion that this is a Burkitt lymphoma just by the gross macroscopy.

Due to its location in the abdominal region this is most likely a sporadic Burkitt lymphoma.
