Renal angiomyolipoma

Renal angiomyolipoma is a benign hamartoma of the kidney. It’s comprised of blood vessels, smooth muscle and adipose tissue, as the name suggests. It’s more frequent in patients with tuberous sclerosis.

  • 4x more common in females
  • Associated with tuberous sclerosis
  • Mostly asymptomatic

Diagnosis

  • Images show tumour with high fat content
  • US or CT

Treatment

  • Laparoscopic partial nephrectomy
  • Indications for treatment
    • Symptomatic tumours
    • Large asymptomatic tumours
    • Diagnostic uncertainty (low fat content)
